"I want to go to Disney!”
-A 6 year old girl's wish to Make-A-Wish
Growing up with Sickle Cell Disease, my childhood was blessed to have fewer emergencies than an average patient. My first blood transfusion was one I have the treat of not remembering but can be told through my parents. It was actually really interesting because I had a virus where my red blood cells were being killed, like at least just kill the bad cells if you're gonna invade my body [insert laugh].
Anyways, a big highlight came when I had the opportunity to go to Disney through Make-A-Wish. I honestly want to shout them out because through all that hospitalization they convinced me that I was in Candyland-yes, the game. That's a core memory right there. Looking back, my childhood allowed me to value the things I had in life more and I developed a strong sense of empathy, so yeah :)
